What is WAN

by Yogi P - September 3, 2023

WAN stands for Wide Area Network. A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a type of computer network that connects computers and other devices from multiple locations that are expected to be geographically separate. WANs tend to be larger than smaller networks and can encompass larger areas, such as cities, states, and even entire countries.

How a WAN Works

A WAN is composed of many smaller networks or Local Area Networks (LANs). Each small network is linked to other small networks together by a router or switches, which are usually located at various sites or locations. These routers create pathways on which data is sent and received. By connecting these small networks together, they form a larger network such as the internet.

Benefits of a WAN

WANs provide a number of advantages to their users. One of the most important benefits that they offer is the ability to connect distant locations together in order to easily facilitate communication and data exchange. This makes WANs particularly useful for businesses or organizations with multiple offices that need to remain constantly connected. Additionally, WANs can provide access to a number of services such as VoIP and web conferencing.

Conclusion

Wide Area Networks provide an important service for businesses and organizations, allowing them to quickly and easily connect different locations together to exchange data. By connecting multiple Local Area Networks together, WANs can create a powerful network that is able to facilitate communication and data exchange on a much larger scale than a single LAN could.
